Committee Structure

The SURE Network has the following committee structure:

  • SURE Network National Committee
  • SURE Network National Programme Committee
  • SURE Network National Conference Committee
  • SURE Network Local Programme Committees
  • SURE Network Local Conference Committees
  • SURE Network Undergraduate Journal Committee
  • SURE Network Curriculum Development Committee
  • SURE Network Digital Badge Committee
  • SURE Network Evaluation Committee

Terms of reference and membership for these committees are listed below.

SURE Network National Committee

Chairperson: Ciarán O’Leary, Technological University Dublin
Deputy Chairperson: Therese Montgomery, Athlone Institute of Technology

Membership: At least one representative of each member Institute of Technology

Term of Office: The term of office for the SURE Network National Committee is for three (3) conference cycles.

Purpose of SURE Network: To form a community of institutions and people interested in enhancing practice in undergraduate research in the Sciences.

Objectives of SURE Network:

  • To provide a shared space where resources can be exchanged, disseminated and stored for use by others.
  • To form a community where connections can be formed on a national and/or regional basis tenable the establishment of inter-institutional initiatives e.g. undergraduate conferences.
  • To provide a platform which can collectively apply for sponsorship, funding etc where appropriate.

SURE Network National Programme Committee (NPC)

Co-Chairpersons: Ciarán O’LearyTechnological University DublinAnne Marie O’BrienAthlone Institute of Technology

Membership: At last one representative from each Local Programme Committee.

Term of Office: The term of office for chairpersonship of the NPC is for three (3) conference cycles. The term of office for membership the NPC is for one (1) conference cycle.

Reporting: The NPC is a sub-committee of the SURE National Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) to each meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference

  • To develop a single call for papers to cover all conferences in a given year.
  • To facilitate the submission of abstracts by students in all member Institutions.
  • To facilitate the review of all conference submissions.
  • To provide review information to Local Programme Committees.
  • To collate all accepted abstracts and author information and provide these the National Conference Committee for the development of the conference booklets.
  • To provide recognition to all conference participants through Digital Badges.
  • To assess the mid-to-long term impact of the conference on its participants.

SURE Network National Conference Committee (NCC)

Co-Chairpersons: Cormac Quigley, Galway-Mayo Institute of Technology; Therese Montgomery, Athlone Institute of Technology

Membership: At least two (2) representatives from each Local Conference Committee.

Term of Office: The term of office for the NCC is for one (1) conference cycle.

Reporting: The NCC is a sub-committee of the SURE Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) to each meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference:

  • To coordinate across the organising committees for all conferences in a given year.
  • To develop the conference flyer.
  • To develop the conference website.
  • To develop the conference booklet.
  • To source national funding, including potential title sponsorship.
  • To coordinate the development of the conference schedule (speakers, workshops) across all venues.

SURE Network Local Programme Committee (LPC)

There will be one LPC for each conference. If three conferences are taking place in a given year (as is the case for 2020), then there will be three LPCs.

Chairperson: To be selected by the host institution.

Membership: To be selected by the host institution from their own staff.

Term of Office: The term of office for the LPC is for one (1) conference cycle.

Reporting: The LPC is a sub-committee of the SURE National Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) to each meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference:

  • To recruit reviewers for conference submissions and provide details to the National Programme Committee.
  • To select papers to be presented orally and as posters at the local conference.
  • To inform authors of the status of their submission (e.g. accept, revise, decline).
  • To provide feedback to authors regarding their submission.
  • To collect the final, revised version of the abstract from the author, and provide this to the National Programme Committee.
  • To confirm the attendance of authors at the conference, and make revisions to the selected papers if required.
  • To guide authors in the development of their presentations (oral or poster).

SURE Network Local Conference Committee (LCC)

There will be one LCC for each conference. If three conferences are taking place in a given year (as is the case for 2020), then there will be three LCCs.

Chairperson: To be selected by the host institution.

Membership: To be selected by the host institution from their own staff.

Term of Office: The term of office for the LCC is for one (1) conference cycle.

Reporting: The LCC is a sub-committee of the SURE National Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) to each meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference:

  • To organise the local conference venue.
  • To source funding through the local Institution or otherwise timplement the conference.
  • To organise the local conference schedule, speakers and workshops.
  • To organise printing of posters.

SURE Network Undergraduate Journal Committee (UJC)

Chairperson: Barry RyanTechnological University Dublin

Membership: Five (5) or more members to be selected from SURE Network members.

Term of Office: The term of office for the UJC is for three (3) conference cycles.

Reporting: The UJC is a sub-committee of the SURE Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) teach meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference:

  • To select papers for the undergraduate journal from the papers presented at the conferences.
  • To provide guidance and feedback to authors of papers.
  • To arrange a suitable platform for the publication of the undergraduate journal.
  • To publicise the journal.

Current Members:

SURE Network Curriculum Development Committee (CPC)

Chairperson: Therese Montgomery, Athlone Institute of Technology

Membership: Five (5) or more members to be selected from SURE Network members.

Term of Office: Three years

Reporting: The CPC is a sub-committee of the SURE Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) teach meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference:

  • To develop models for the integration of the undergraduate conference and the undergraduate journal in the undergraduate curriculum.
  • To survey SURE Network members regarding undergraduate research models (e.g. implementation of final year projects, incorporation of research at earlier stages of programme).
  • To investigate undergraduate research models being implemented nationally and internationally.
  • To research and develop models, guidelines and recommendations for undergraduate programme teams where seeking to further integrate research in their curriculum.

Current Members:

SURE Network Digital Badge Committee

Chairperson: Anne Marie O’Brien, Athlone Institute of Technology

Membership: Five (5) or more members to be selected from SURE Network members.

Term of Office: Three years

Reporting: The Digital Badge Committee is a sub-committee of the SURE Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) teach meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference:

  • To develop and implement the SURE Network digital badge strategy.
  • To propose and agree guidelines and criteria for the development and approval of new SURE Network digital badges.
  • To approve SURE Network digital badges and associated criteria that are proposed by SURE Network members and/or SURE Network Committees.
  • To provide guidance to SURE Network members, students, academic staff and others as required regarding SURE Network digital badges.
  • To effectively manage and govern the issuing and use of SURE Network digital badges.
  • To monitor the use and impact of SURE Network digital badges.
  • To lead on the use and assessment of Team Based Learning for the preparation of students and others for SURE Network activities potentially leading to the acquisition of a digital badge.

SURE Network Evaluation Committee

Chairpersons: Laura KeaverInstitute of Technology, Sligo; Eva CampionInstitute of Technology, Sligo

Membership: All partners and committees to be represented.

Term of Office: Chairpersons to be in place for three years. Membership to be reviewed annually as projects and activities are taking place.

Reporting: The Evaluation Committee is a sub-committee of the SURE Network Committee and will submit reports (written or verbal) to each meeting of the SURE Network Committee.

Terms of Reference:

  • To lead on the long-term evaluation of the impact of the SURE Network and its activities.
  • To advise and support other committees on the evaluation of their activities, in partnership with the organisers of the activities.
  • To advise and support individual partners on the assessment of the impact of SURE Network activities on staff, students and graduates in that partner.
