SUREbyts -> Apply for a SUREbyts Digital Badge


If you have created a SUREbyt video, used and promoted a SUREbyt video with students, or engaged with a SUREbyt video as a student, you can apply for a Digital Badge from the SURE Network. You can then add the badge to your CV or social media profile (see here for instructions on how to share on social media). You cannot use the Digital Badge unless you have completed the associated approval process, as described below.


Apply for a SUREbyt Creator Digital Badge

A SUREbyt Creator is a researcher or research student that created a SUREbyt video that has been made available on the SUREbyts website.

The badge is earned on the basis of the applicant:

  • Showing initiative by volunteering to create a SUREbyt video on their research;
  • Creating a storyboard/script outlining their recording design;
  • Attending a workshop/ engaging with the recorded webinar outlining the criteria for the SUREbyt video creation;
  • Presenting their research professionally and enthusiastically;
  • Recording and editing a video in two parts, Part 1: Introducing themselves, outlining their research question and 3 possible solutions, Part 2: Discussing the strategies they tried and how the research worked out;
  • Taking feedback onboard and making amendments as suggested in a flexible and collegial manner.

To apply for a SUREbyt Creator Digital Badge you will need to complete this form, which requires you to describe and reflect upon the creation process. You should then contact the Digital Badge Coordinators, Dr Anne Marie O’Brien and Dr Eileen O’Leary to inform them that you have made a submission. It normally takes one week to consider your application for a Digital Badge.


Apply for a SUREbyt Promoter Digital Badge

A SUREbyt Promoter is a lecturer or any individual that used a SUREbyt video (or more than one) to promote early-year undergraduate students’ interest in research.

The badge is earned on the basis of the applicant:

  • Identifying a suitable student cohort in first or second year to engage in using the SUREbyts;
  • Selecting suitable SUREbyts for their disciplinary area;
  • Introducing students to the SUREbyts;
  • Providing a structured opportunity for students to engage with the SUREbyts;
  • Facilitating student discussion on the SUREbyts;
  • Collecting feedback from students on their experience and learning from engaging with the SUREbyts;
  • Compiling a self-reflection and recording self-observations on the process and documenting how they used the SUREbyts;
  • Compiling a list of recommendations (minimum 3) based on their experience in the process of using the SUREbyts

Apply for a SUREbyt Engager Digital Badge

A SUREbyt Engager is an early years (usually first or second year) undergraduate student who engaged with SUREbyts, by watching and discussing one or more of the SUREbyts videos.

The badge is earned on the basis of the applicant:

  • Showing initiative by engaging with the SUREbyt video;
  • Discussing and carrying out further investigation on the topic;
  • Outlining how they engaged with the SUREbyt and what they learned as a result (at least two points);
  • Providing feedback on their experience of engaging with the SUREbyt videos;
  • Making a list (at least 3) further questions, related to the research topic, that they have as a result of watching the SUREByt video.
