Sticky Genes: Can Repeated DNA Sequences Trigger Motor Neurone Disease?

Headshot of Guste Venslovaite

My research provides preliminary evidence for an underlying mechanism of neurodegeneration in MND, whose cause is still misunderstood. The lack of treatments to prevent, slow, or cure MND means that a diagnosis essentially equates to an imminent death-sentence. The immense impact that this has on the lives of patients and families, and the broader context of neurodegeneration in an ageing population, warrants investment into research to interrogate underlying biology and identify actionable targets. This should impact Positive Ageing and Public Health strategies, bringing light to the urgent need for NDD treatments and the undiscovered disease drivers that can provide them.
