Assessing Demand and Simulating Feasibility for Commuter Rail in Lagging Regional Areas. Case Study: Sligo

This research has produced the evidential basis required by regional politicians to advocate for equitable rail policies which recognise regional requirements.
It has already prompted further action from local county councillors, in the area determined to make this long overdue service a reality.
In providing a ready-made pilot project at minimal cost it provides financial, social and environmental grounds for implementation.
In addition, the methodology used, in particular the coded visualisation tool could be easily reproduced in order to test other routes providing a model for a publicly mandated regional rail revival across Ireland.
