A Fast-Track Way to Identify Derelict and Vacant Homes for Refurbishment

Headshot of Dylan O'Donnell

This project demonstrates that low-cost LiDAR and photogrammetry can transform how Ireland identifies and assesses derelict and vacant properties. By reducing survey time from days to hours and cost by over 90%, councils can capture accurate, verifiable data at scale. The evidence directly supports national policy goals: establishing a unified dereliction database, implementing the Derelict Sites Tax, and accelerating the reuse of thousands of empty buildings. Adopting this approach nationally would make Ireland’s dereliction register fully digital, empowering local authorities and policymakers to act faster on housing recovery.
